Review of Sparrow Rock by Nate Kenyon

First, let me say that I got a free pdf of this book and am not making any money off this review.

Sparrow Rock by Nate Kenyon starts out innocently enough. At least as innocent it can be with teenage friends deciding to spend the night a bomb shelter, built by the grandfather of one of the friends. They spend the night, playing card games, smoking weed and drinking. And while they are in there, the world comes to a terrible end.

It begins with a slight tremor. The next one causes things to crash off shelves and Pete gets a feeling that all is not right. And when a purple, then pink, followed by blinding white, glow comes down the steps, two of the six, Dan and Pete, rushed up to close the hatch and catch sight of several mushroom clouds. From then on, the six friends find their night has stretched into who knows how long. Tensions build and secrets slip out. Worse, they find worse things than radiation to contend with, as undead rats and strange bugs come out of hiding and begin to attack.

The characters are interesting and the storyline kept me involved until the very end. Sparrow Rock is one part Stephen King’s Stand By Me, one part Nevil Shute’s On the Beach, and definitely a haunted house story for the Apocalypse. This is a must read that surely will be added to the lists of the best Post-Apocalypse novels.Whether download or print, this is a book for that great summer read at the beach.
