Four Questions Friday

Today’s Four Questions Friday asks about books and what genres you read. With a chill in the air here today where I live and National Bookstore day coming November 7th, this is a good subject to talk about. The current book I am reading is Vampire A Go-Go by Victor Gischler. It’s pretty good so far.

1. What genres do you read?

2. When you down or depressed, do books give you comfort?

3. Name the best book you ever read?

4. Where do you buy most of your books: an independent bookstore, a chain bookstore or online?

Luv that picture!

1. What genres do you read?

Mystery, romance (mostly paranormal these days), fantasy & SF (not as much of the latter as I used to), and occasionally something historical. I also read general fiction and occasional non-fiction.

2. When you down or depressed, do books give you comfort?

No, when I'm depressed all I'm capable of is staring at the TV.

3. Name the best book you ever read?

Gah! Just one? I could cheat and say The Complete Works of Shakespeare, but I haven't read all the plays let alone all the sonnets. To Kill a Mockingbird is a near-perfect book. I was thinking about it just this morning. But there are so very many that have touched me. From my young days I absolutely loved The Horsemasters by Don Stanford. And lately I've been feeling an urge to re-read Tess of the d'Urbervilles, which I've already read twice.

4. Where do you buy most of your books: an independent bookstore, a chain bookstore or online?

Not much left in the way of independent bookstores around where I live. I probably buy most of my books through book clubs (Doubleday Large Print, The Good Cook, and I just rejoined QPBC) and since I respond to e-mails rather than mailings now, I guess that qualifies as on-line.

1. Almost everything. I read some more than others, though. Literary, horror, science-fiction, historical.

2. Sometimes. Certain books will work for me when I'm feeling different kinds of down. This past October, I was feeling depressed and picked up Ray Bradbury's "The Halloween Tree," a book I loved in childhood, and that completely changed my mood and put me in the holiday spirit.

3. Good question. I hate to have to answer it, but if I must I'd say "The Hours" by Michael Cunningham.

4. I try to patronize my independent bookstore, when I can afford it. Otherwise, online is the most frequented means of book purchase for me... sometimes a chain store.

It would be easier to ask what I don't read. I don't read much inspi, and I don't read much straight genre mystery. Other than that, I pretty much read everything. I prefer spec fic (science fiction, fantasy, horror, urban fantasy) with or without a romance or erotic content.

2. When you down or depressed, do books give you comfort?

Absolutely.

3. Name the best book you ever read?

I can't choose just one. Not my thing to make singular choices.

4. Where do you buy most of your books: an independent bookstore, a chain bookstore or online?

I buy most of mine online, between e-books and print. When I don't purchase online, I tend to go to B&N or Borders for books. We don't have many indie book stores in this area.
