Supernatural Friday: What's Scary on Your Reading List This Summer?

Mrmorial Day Weekend is a week away. People will be thinking of swimming as the pools open and others head for three days at the beach. Daytime will last until 8:30 p.m. And yet, people read scary reads even though Halloween is still about five months away. Horror books are as good a read for the beach or to read indoors in the AC as that latest bestseller by James Patterson.

What is horror? Horror fiction, horror literature and also horror fantasy is a genre of literature, which is intended to, or has the capacity to frighten its readers, scare or startle viewers/readers by inducing feelings of horror and terror. It creates an eerie and frightening atmosphere. Horror can be either supernatural or non-supernatural. Often the central menace of a work of horror fiction can be interpreted as a metaphor for the larger fears of a society. The genre has ancient origins which were reformulated in the 18th century as Gothic horror, with publication of the Castle of Otranto (1764) by Horace Walpole.

So, see you can even take on the old classics. Like Dracula by Bram Stoker, H P. Lovecraft’s tales, those scary tales by Edgar Allan Poe, Shirley Jackson ghost story, The Haunting of Hill House, and many others. Today, horror has changed into many different ways. From urban fantasy. psychological, to gory fiction to weird, science fiction horror, paranormal romance, and Johnny-come-lately term, cozy horror (can being scared ever be called cozy?) not unlike cozy mysteries. 

 

So many ways to read yourself shuddering palpitations of the heart.

Supernatural Friday: Happy Haunting. . .I Mean Reading!

 

It's Friday and I've been ill past couple of days.  So today, I will go easy on myself. Since World Horror Convention is going on this weekend in New Orleans and it's summer and many libraries will be doing summer reading, where you read at most ten books and turn in you did so for a prize, maybe even to help buy bag of foo for a animal shelter, or something else.

Horror books are a good beach read or to read indoors in the AC. With Stephen King's novel,  Under the Dome coming as a TV minseries end of this month, might be a good time to attempt to read it before hand. Or numerous other books.

Writer’s Wednesday: Urban Fantasies

As of today, this will be Writer’s Wednesday. If you’re an author of horror, science fiction, fantasy, nonfiction ghost books, poetry, thriller and mysteries, you can contact me to do a guest blog about writing on one of the Wednesdays.

What is it about urban fantasies that people are reading these days? Urban fantasy is supposed to mean fantasy happening in city landscapes. That is usually with fairies and other creatures of a fantastical bent. Actually the name implies throwing fantasy elements into our urban society. Though the last few years, publishers have even added ghosts, vampires, werewolves, zombies and creatures considered to belong in the horror genre. An author I read, Laura K. Hamilton, was considered under horror when I first began her Anita Blake series, but later was called urban fantasy. Now there's even romance added to the mix. Not that horror and fantasy can’t have romance in the storyline.

My first urban fantasy read was Emma Bull's War for the Oaks, back in 1987. I've read others since then, though they were termed fantasies then. But by the twenty-first century, the name, urban fantasy, was coined. It's one of my favorites to read. I have even finished one myself that I am now shopping around. Under my pseudonym for paranormal romance, Sapphire Phelan, I have written two books in a series, that first came out as eBooks, Being Familiar With a Witch and A Familiar Tangle With Hell, and now is out in print together in one book, The Witch And The Familiar. Of course, none these are for anyone under 18, being erotic. LOL.
